Richard Nason (c. 1606 – 1696)

Richard Nason was living at Pipe Stave Landing in what is now South Bewick, Maine, by 1640. He may have been there considerably earlier.

Although there’s no known record of where he came from or how he arrived here, it is generally assumed that he is the same Richard Nason who was baptized in Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire, England on August 3, 1606, the son of John Nason and Elizabeth Rogers. The assumption seems to be based on the name and the fact that the dates line up.

Richard’s will was dated 14 July 1694 and probated 15 March 1696/7.

Spouses

Richard married Sarah, possibly the daughter of John Baker of Dover, NH according to the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire. All of Richard’s children were by Sarah.

Richard’s second marriage after 1663 was to Abigail, the widow of Nicholas Follett. There is little information about her that I’ve been able to find.

Notes

Some sources (including Stackpole) name a Charles Nason as a possible son of Richard, but there is no reliable source for this.

A Willoughby Nason was living in Ipswich around the time of Richard, but there is no known connection between the two.
